The complete IChI ‘name’ is composed of one or more ‘layers’ the depend on the input structural information. The actual layers employed by a chemist will depend on which of the structural features are known by the chemist for representation. If a layer cannot be constructed, it is simply omitted from the IChI representation. For instance, if no isotopic elements are present, no isotopic layer (layer 3) is created.
